Profile: Benjamin Munyao

My full name is Benjamin Munyao David, although I am often known simply as Ben Munyao.

How would you describe yourself?

I am a writer, author, poet, and dreamer who believes deeply in the power of words. I come from a humble background in Kenya, and writing became the language through which I learned to understand myself, my community, and the wider world. I write about people, memory, struggle, hope, injustice, love, and the extraordinary stories hidden inside ordinary lives.

What would you say is your main identity?

My main identity is that of a writer and storyteller. I see writing not merely as a profession, but as a responsibility—to give a voice to experiences that might otherwise remain unheard, and to remind people that their stories matter.

Who are some of your role models, people you respect and learn from? Why?

I draw inspiration from writers and thinkers who have used language to illuminate society and challenge injustice. I admire writers such as Chinua Achebe, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, Maya Angelou, James Baldwin, and Gabriel García Márquez because they understood that literature can do more than entertain—it can preserve memory, question power, restore dignity, and change the way people see the world.

I am also inspired by ordinary people: parents who sacrifice quietly, young people who continue dreaming despite difficult circumstances, and communities that survive hardship without losing their humanity. Some of the greatest teachers I have ever had have never written a book.

What are 3 main projects or goals you’re focusing on at the moment?

i. Continuing to write and publish fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction that speaks to human experiences and social realities.

ii. Growing my work as an author and reaching readers beyond Kenya and across the wider world.

iii. Building a sustainable future through writing while creating work that can inspire, challenge, and give hope to others—especially young people from humble backgrounds who may feel that their circumstances have already written the ending of their story.

Tell me a little more about one of those.

One of my greatest goals is to grow as an author while remaining faithful to where I came from. My debut book, ONE STEP THROUGH THE FIRE, represents part of that journey. For me, becoming a writer has never been simply about having my name on a book. It is about proving that a person can begin with very little except a voice, a pen, and a stubborn belief in possibility—and still create something meaningful.

I want my writing to travel. I want it to cross borders, cultures, and circumstances and find readers who recognize something of themselves in the stories. Most importantly, I want my work to leave behind a little more courage than it found.

What are 3 achievements you’re proud of?

i. Becoming a published author and bringing my debut book, ONE STEP THROUGH THE FIRE, into the world.

ii. Developing my voice as a writer and continuing to write despite the many challenges that come with pursuing literature from a humble background.

iii. Having my writing reach readers and fellow writers who have encouraged me to continue telling stories that carry emotional and social meaning.

Tell us more about one of them.

Becoming a published author is particularly meaningful to me because it represents a journey that began long before I held a published book in my hands. There were doubts, limitations, and moments when giving up would have been easier. But I continued writing.

Publishing ONE STEP THROUGH THE FIRE therefore feels bigger than a personal achievement. It is a reminder that dreams do not always begin in comfortable places. Sometimes they begin quietly—in difficult circumstances—with nothing more than a person refusing to stop believing that their voice deserves to be heard.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

I believe that the future is built not only by those with resources and influence, but also by those who are willing to imagine something better and begin creating it.

I come from a humble background, but I have learned that having little does not mean having nothing to give. Sometimes all we possess is a story, a voice, or a dream. Yet those things can travel farther than we ever will.

Writing has taught me that words can become bridges. They can cross generations, borders, poverty, loneliness, and difference. They can preserve what history forgets and give courage to someone who is still trying to find their way.
