Poets dare to speak and live the truth. Apparently that scares the pants off the powers that be — upholders of the status quo, of patriarchy, of capitalism and of fascism.
In 1952 thirteen Soviet Jewish anti-fascists (including 4 poets, a distinguished novelist and 2 journalists) were executed — following years of imprisonment and torture. The event is known as Night of the Murdered Poets, or The Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee Affair.
In 1973 Chilean poet Pablo Neruda (winner of 2 Peace Prizes and a Nobel Prize in Literature) was covertly poisoned in hospital during a political coup.
