This Christmas, Buy Nothing!

As consumers, we have power. Without anyone to buy stuff, the growth and ‘progress’ of capitalism would grind to a halt.

So next time you’re faced with a buying decision, think carefully. Choose wisely.

Do you really need to make the purchase?

(If it’s food, then perhaps yes. Still, you can prefer the option with least packaging, and choose something locally grown over an import. Food that is packaged and transported less creates less emissions, and is noticeably FRESHER and often healthier. Organically grown or chemical-free food is a wise choice; it might be more expensive, but long-term, your health will benefit from the reduced toxin load. It’s often richer in flavour too…so why not treat yourself to organic food this Christmas…see what all the fuss is about?)

If it’s not a consumable, but you decide you really do need this object: Can you borrow the item? Is someone giving one away? Can you source a second-hand one?

For gifts, consider tickets to live productions, donations on their behalf, make something yourself, or support a local artist or crafter.

You might not be able to BUY NOTHING, but you can always BUY LESS and BUY BETTER.

There are online groups to help you share unwanted stuff, such as Buy Nothing Groups and Freecycle. And there will be local Upcyclers near you.

Let’s all have a landfill-free Christmas season, and feel good about the difference we can make, collectively.
